解説
戦国時代、肥後国において、細川家藩主、細川三斎は千利休と交流が深くお茶や和歌など美術、芸術などに秀でた文化人であった。その三斎の指導により肥後拵や肥後鍔などが生まれ、刀装具界で光彩を放っており、たくさんの数奇者を魅了している。その肥後の中で林、平田、西垣、志水の四家をもって四支流を形成し、いずれも藩主に仕え代々繁栄し幕末まで及んでいる。林家は林又七を祖とし、又七は細川家のお抱え工として肥後金工を代表する名人である。林の作品の多くは透かし鍔で素材は主に鉄を使い、錆付が優れ鉄味が良い。
本作も破扇を見事にすかし、鉄味がすこぶる良く、肥後鍔の魅力を存分に楽しめる林の名品である。
Explanation
Higo Tsuba was born under the leadership of Sansai Hosokawa who was the feudal lord of Higo. Higo Tsuba was established from 4 branch;Hayashi/Hirata/Nishigaki/Shimidu、and each branches served the feudal lord.
Matashichi Hayashi who is an ancestor of Hayashi family, is an craft on a retainer of Hosokawa family as a representative expert of Higo Kinkou(metalworking). Most of his works are Sukashi Tsuba(openwork Tsuba), the material is used mainly iron. His flavor of iron is excellent.
This work also has Hasen design (broken fun) with the great open work, the flavor of iron is extremely beautiful, and this can be fully enjoyed as Hayashi’s fine article which is an attractive Higo Tsuba.
